# Updates

> How the app updates itself and checks versions.

Godot MCP Studio keeps itself current so you always have the latest tools and
fixes.

## Automatic updates

The desktop app checks for updates on launch and applies signed updates in the
background. Updates are cryptographically verified before they're installed, so
you only ever run builds we actually published.

## What "lifetime" covers

Your license includes all v1.x updates: new tools, new categories, fixes, and
improvements land automatically. "Lifetime" means the v1.x line, not unlimited
future major versions; see the [EULA](https://www.godotmcpstudio.com/legal/eula).

## Editor add-on updates

When the app ships a newer addon than the one in your project, it refreshes the
version status for the selected project. You approve the update in the app.
Project settings and scenes are untouched; only files under
`addons/godot_mcp_studio/` change.

## Agent rules and skills update independently

The full edition checks its licensed web rule bundle for the project selected in
the app. When a new version is available, the app shows what would change.
Nothing is written until you click Update. The update applies only to that
selected project, never every project in Recent.

Locally edited files are preserved. The app only replaces a managed file when
its content still matches the version it previously installed. If you are
offline, the current project files stay in place.

If you edited the Godot MCP Studio section of `CLAUDE.md` or `AGENTS.md`, a
rules update warns you in red, lets you copy your edits first, and keeps a
backup of the old file. This works in both editions. Skipping an update hides
it until a newer one comes out, the update banner only appears when there is
something to change, and you can turn update suggestions off.

When a project has no rules or skills yet, the app offers to set them up the
first time you open it. Nothing is installed until you choose.

Managed skill files are licensed product content. In a standard Git checkout,
the app adds their exact paths to `.git/info/exclude` so they stay local without
changing the project's shared `.gitignore`. Do not force-add those files to a
public repository. Your game code and other project output are unaffected.

## Release notes

Every release is listed on the [changelog](https://www.godotmcpstudio.com/changelog) with what changed. If an
update is mandatory (for example, a security fix), the app will let you know.
The desktop also shows a short animated summary on first launch and once after
each installed update. It does not appear on every launch.
